Data protection services
If you’re in need of advice or guidance around data protection laws, working with Data Matters will give you access to the skills you need. Data protection has become a vital business component for every firm in Ireland, particularly those that store sensitive information on customers. It’s not an issue that can be ignored but with our support you can seamlessly put the necessary policies and protection in place.
What is data protection law?
Data protection laws in Ireland are in line with those of the rest of the EU, under the Data Protection Directive. Aiming to protect the rights of individuals, these laws govern how personal data is processed and the free movement of the information. It’s a highly developed, and sometimes confusing, area of law but one that businesses across the country must abide by.
Ensuring personal data – defined as any information relating to an identified person – meets standards set out is the responsibility of the controller. In order for data to be processed it has to meet a set of transparency standards, typically the person who the data is based on giving their consent.
At the moment, EU member states are not legally bound to the Data Protection Directive but this is set to change under the transition to the General Data Protection Regulation, in which tougher penalties will also be imposed.
Why does it matter to you?
As a business, you might be wondering why the data protection law matters to you. But if you’re collecting information on your customers, you need to be aware of the law and ensure that you’re complying.
It’s not simply a case of the sanctions that may be applied if you fail to meet the standards that are set out either. Breeches in data protection can have a severe impact on your reputation, harming your current customer base. For those firms that are in an industry where they are likely to hold sensitive data, such as medical records, it’s even more important to take steps to ensure compliance.
